Everything You Wanted to Know About Black Hair Care

Black hair is the blackest and darkest of all hair colors. It is also the most common of hair colors all around the world. Hair color is a dominant genetic trait and contrary to popular belief, different hair colors can be found in different ethnicities and cultures. Black hair is one of the commonest hair colors and may occur in any one right from Caucasians, to Hispanics, and Africans.

Black hair gets its color from the color pigment eumelanin, secreted by the melanocytes in the skin cells. These melanocytes, which are present all over our body and give the skin its color, are also present in the scalp. In the scalp, the melanocytes synthesize the pigment to color the hair. Black hair has the densest concentration of eumelanin. However, because of the dense concentration of the pigment, people with black hair usually do not have very dense hair growth. Black color is the shiniest in all hair colors. The potency and the density of the pigment eumelanin, gives the hair a lustrous look. Brown hair, though dark as well, is not dark enough to appear as lustrous as black hair. In black hair, too, there are several different shades. Soft black, blue black, and rufous are some of the different shades of hair color in black hair. In the sun, black hair may also appear silver blue in color.

There are also some men and women who have extremely black hair, also known as raven hair or jet black hair. Since anyone, from any ethnicity can have natural black hair, this color of hair goes well with all kinds of skin tones—olive, pale, brown and black. Even if the hair of a person is black, the person may have light colored eyes because the quantity of eumelanin secreted in the irises and the hair may not always be the same.

Black hair care is not very difficult. Since it goes well with any kind of skin tone, black hair could be styled to make one look elegant and beautiful. To retain the color of the black hair, it is best to avoid a lot of styling chemicals, as black hairs tend to turn brown and eventually white with over use of chemicals and other kinds of abuse. Washing of the hair should ideally be done at least once a week. Oil should also be applied to the scalp every once in a while, so that the scalp remains nourished and the hair remains healthy.
