Head lice are tiny bugs that infest the human scalp. They most commonly affect children below the age of 12 years, but can also occur in adults. Head lice spread easily from one individual to another when there is direct contact. The most common symptom of head lice is itching. The areas behind the ears, neck and back may also experience itching. Head lice do not pose a serious harm to the health of the individual. However, the itching can become severe in some cases which may cause the person to scratch the scalp. This can lead to secondary infections. The causes of head lice do not include poor personal hygiene, but it is advisable to keep the scalp clean at all times so that other infections do not occur.

Treatment for head lice usually involves the use of medicated shampoos and applications. Some of these products may contain strong chemicals that could be harmful for young children. A good alternative head lice treatment involves the use of natural ingredients such as olive oil. Olive oil head lice treatment has been found to be extremely effective in many cases. When the oil is applied to the scalp and hair, the lice get smothered and are unable to survive. The same effect can also be achieved with other ingredients such as mayonnaise or petroleum jelly. However, the olive oil head lice treatment option is preferred by many people because it is easier to remove from the hair and also has a pleasant fragrance. Olive oil treatment for head lice can be done using low priced olive oil. One does not have to opt for the more expensive extra virgin varieties.

To perform the olive oil head lice treatment, first drape a towel around the child so that any excess oil is absorbed. Then take some olive oil and apply it on the child’s head. The quantity used should be generous so that it covers the entire head. Once the application is done, gather the hair at the top of head and place a shower cap or a plastic wrap over the head. The oil should remain on the head for some time. It is advisable to do this treatment at night so that the oil can be left on overnight. The following morning, comb the hair with a lice comb to remove dead lice and nits. Then wash the hair properly with a gentle shampoo. A small amount of vinegar may be added to regular shampoo and used to wash the hair. This is effective in removing all traces of the oil.
